A Collaboration with Kevin Hunter

Here at The Nancy Smillie Shop, we've always celebrated creativity. For over four decades, our shops have been carefully curated spaces, filled with unique, design-led furniture, art, jewellery, and gifts. We believe that good design enhances everyday life. When we decided to create a new online home, our biggest challenge was capturing that unique, in-store feeling—the joy of discovery and the appreciation for true craftsmanship—in a digital format.

To achieve this, we knew we needed more than a web developer; we needed a partner with an artist's soul. We found that perfect combination in the celebrated Scottish artist and web designer, Kevin Hunter.

The Right Eye for Design

Choosing Kevin was a natural fit. While he is widely known for his stunning, atmospheric paintings of Scottish landscapes, it was his fundamental understanding of aesthetics, composition, and colour that drew us to him. Our collection is eclectic, blending contemporary design with timeless crafts. We needed a designer who could appreciate that diversity and create a clean, elegant framework to let each piece shine.

Kevin's dual expertise meant he could approach the project with a unique perspective. He understood that a website, like a gallery wall, needs balance and breathing room. He saw how colours interact, how typography sets a mood, and how a seamless user journey is, in itself, a form of art.

Crafting the Online Experience

The collaborative process with Kevin was inspiring. We didn't just talk about code and features; we talked about feelings and atmosphere. How could we make browsing our collections online feel as delightful as wandering through our shops in Glasgow?

Kevin’s approach was one of sophisticated simplicity. He designed a minimalist, intuitive layout that puts our products front and centre. The colour palette is subtle and modern, creating a calm backdrop that complements the diverse range of items we offer without ever competing with them. The focus was always on creating a clean, visually-led experience where the quality and design of our curated collections could speak for themselves.
